Send Shopify Customer File Uploads to Dropbox
If you already keep your work files in Dropbox, that's where your customers' uploads should go too. File To Inbox connects your Shopify store to Dropbox so every customer upload — artwork, photos, documents, print files — is delivered straight into your own Dropbox, where it syncs to your computer like any other file. You still get an email notification for every upload, and the files stay in your account, forever, under your control. Dropbox was the app's first storage connection, so it's the most established option, and setup takes about a minute.
1 Connect Dropbox on the dashboard
Open the app's dashboard and find the Where your uploaded files go card. Under Connect your own storage, click Connect next to Dropbox. Dropbox's own sign-in screen opens — log in to the Dropbox account that should receive the files and click Allow. Back on the dashboard, the Dropbox row shows Connected with your account.
2 Point a widget at Dropbox
Open any upload widget or standalone page and scroll to Storage destination. Set the dropdown to Dropbox and Save — that widget's uploads now go to your Dropbox. It's a per-widget setting, so other widgets can keep using Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, SFTP, or the built-in Cloud storage.
3 Choose the folder inside Apps/FileToInbox.com
Dropbox gives the app access to one folder only: Apps/FileToInbox.com in your Dropbox. The app can't see or touch anything else in your account. Leave the Storage folder field empty and uploads land straight in that app folder, or type a folder like "/orders" to keep this widget's files in their own subfolder (the app creates it on first upload). Under Same or separate folders? pick Store each upload session in a separate folder to group each customer's files together. The "Files from this widget will go to" line at the bottom always shows the exact destination, starting with "Dropbox › Apps/FileToInbox.com".
4 Open uploads right from the app
The widget's Uploads list shows each upload session with to Dropbox in the Uploaded column, and each filename links straight to the file in your Dropbox. The email notification for each upload links to the same files, and because it's Dropbox, the files also sync to any computer running the Dropbox app.
Frequently asked questions
How do I upload Shopify customer files to Dropbox?
Connect Dropbox on the app's dashboard (one click plus Dropbox's Allow screen), then set your upload widget's Storage destination to Dropbox. Every customer upload from that widget lands in your Dropbox automatically.
Where in my Dropbox do the files end up?
Inside the Apps/FileToInbox.com folder, in whatever subfolder you set on the widget — or directly in the app folder if you leave the Storage folder field empty. Every widget shows a live "files will go to" line in its settings.
Can the app see the rest of my Dropbox?
No. The Dropbox permission you grant is limited to the Apps/FileToInbox.com folder. The app can't read, change, or delete anything outside it.
Can I move files out of the app folder?
Yes. They're regular Dropbox files, so you can move, rename, or share them however you like. New uploads keep arriving in the widget's folder inside Apps/FileToInbox.com.
How big can uploaded files be?
Up to 5 GB per file, depending on your plan.
How long do files stay in my Dropbox?
Forever. They're regular files in your own Dropbox, so retention is up to you. The 365-day limit only applies to the app's built-in Cloud storage.
Can I use Dropbox for one widget and something else for another?
Yes. Storage destination is a per-widget setting, so different widgets can deliver to Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, SFTP, or the built-in Cloud storage independently.
What happens if I disconnect Dropbox?
Files already delivered stay in your Dropbox. The app never deletes them. Widgets still pointed at Dropbox can't deliver new uploads until you reconnect, so switch their Storage destination first or reconnect the account.
