# 9 Ways to Collect Customer File Uploads on Shopify and Where They Land > Nine ways to collect customer file uploads on Shopify and where they land: product-page widget, upload page, cloud storage, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box, Dropbox, SFTP. Guides · 5 min read · Updated 2026-09-21 Canonical: https://filetoinbox.com/docs/collect-customer-file-uploads-on-shopify Some files belong to an order — the artwork for a print-on-demand mug, the design for an engraving. Others arrive on their own, before or after the sale, and some never involve a product at all. **File To Inbox ‑ File Upload** handles both, and it lets you decide where every uploaded file is delivered: the app's own storage, or the account your team already works in. Here are the nine ways to collect customer files on Shopify and route them somewhere useful — what each one does, when to reach for it, and the guide that walks you through it. They are independent: use one, or all nine. ## 1. Put an upload field on the product pages that need a file The upload widget adds a file field to the product page, so the file arrives tied to the order instead of over email. **Show widget on** takes **All products** or **Specific products**, where **Select products** opens Shopify's own product picker — handy when only your print-on-demand or engraving range needs a file. Turn on **At least one uploaded file required** for products that can't be made without artwork, and cap **Maximum number of uploaded files** (`0` is unlimited). Saving publishes the widget to your storefront, with no theme code to edit. See [Add a file upload field to Shopify product pages](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-product-upload-widget.md) and the [Shopify file upload app overview](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-upload-app.md) for the install and the two surfaces you get out of the box. ## 2. Publish a standalone upload page for files that arrive without an order Not every file comes attached to an order. The app publishes a **standalone upload page** on your storefront when you install it (by default at `/pages/upload`), and it works with no order and no product involved — share the link in order confirmation emails, chat, social, or a QR code on packaging. After you save, the page's public link appears next to it in the dashboard list. If the page is ever deleted, a **Restore standalone page** button brings it back with one click. See [Create a standalone file upload page](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/create-a-file-upload-page.md). ## 3. Ask for the details that should travel with the file An anonymous file is half a job. Under **Extra form fields** you add a **Text** field for a name or order number, an **Email** field to reach the customer, a **Checkbox** for consent, or a **Textarea** for longer notes, and mark any of them **Required**. **Add message textarea** gives visitors a free-text note alongside their files, and under **Text & translations** you can set **Instructions (optional)** above the upload area plus a **Thank you page title** and **Thank you page message** afterwards. Every label has a tab per language your store sells in. The [standalone upload page guide](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/create-a-file-upload-page.md) covers each field. ## 4. Keep it simple with built-in cloud storage and an email notification With nothing connected at all, uploads still work. The dashboard's **Where your uploaded files go** card describes **Our storage**: the app keeps the files, downloadable straight from the dashboard, and holds them for 365 days. Every completed upload also pings your inbox — click **Notification settings** to set the **Notification email**, which takes multiple comma-separated addresses for a whole team and defaults to your shop email when left empty. Details in [Where uploaded files go](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/file-upload-storage-and-notifications.md). ## 5. Send uploads into your own Google Drive If your team already lives in Drive, that's where the files should land. Under **Connect your own storage** click **Connect** next to **Google Drive**, approve Google's consent screen, then set a widget's **Storage destination** to **Google Drive**. The **Storage folder** field defaults to **/FileToInbox.com**, created automatically so files never clutter your Drive root, and files up to 5 GB each are delivered there. They stay in your own account for as long as you want them. Follow [Send Shopify customer file uploads to Google Drive](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-uploads-to-google-drive.md). ## 6. Deliver into OneDrive if your business runs on Microsoft 365 If your business runs on Microsoft 365, the files belong in OneDrive. Under **Connect your own storage** click **Connect** next to **OneDrive**, sign in with the Microsoft account that should own the files, and point a widget's **Storage destination** at **OneDrive**. Uploads land in **/FileToInbox.com** unless you type another path, and each filename in the app's **Uploads** list links straight to the file in OneDrive. If your organization restricts third-party app access, your Microsoft 365 admin may need to approve the connection. See [Send Shopify customer file uploads to OneDrive](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-uploads-to-onedrive.md). ## 7. Deliver into Box when your company standardizes on it Signed documents, medical forms and source material often have to live under company policy. Click **Connect** next to **Box**, log in to the Box account that should receive the files, and set a widget's **Storage destination** to **Box**. Files are organized in the **/FileToInbox.com** folder by default, stay in your own account under your own retention policies, and a Box enterprise admin may need to allow the connection first. See [Send Shopify customer file uploads to Box](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-uploads-to-box.md). ## 8. Send uploads to Dropbox or your own SFTP / FTP server **Dropbox** and **SFTP / FTP** are also in the **Connect your own storage** list on the dashboard. For Dropbox, click **Connect**, approve the permission screen, then pick **Dropbox** as the widget's **Storage destination**. **SFTP / FTP** uses **Set up** instead and asks for your server details. Because the destination is set per widget, your product-page uploads and your standalone page can land in completely different places. Both are covered in [Where uploaded files go](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/file-upload-storage-and-notifications.md). ## 9. Find the file, download it, and match it to the order Collecting is half the job; fulfilment needs the file in front of you. Each widget in the dashboard shows a **View uploads** link with a count, opening a list of every submission with a **Files** column, a **Details** column holding the message and extra form fields, and an **Uploaded** column with the date and where the files were sent. For product-widget uploads an **Order** column links to **View order** in Shopify admin once you've authorized read-orders access. The **Upload health** card reports the delivery success rate over the last 30 days, retries failed deliveries every 30 minutes, and offers **Retry now** when you'd rather not wait. See [Find and download files customers uploaded](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/find-customer-uploaded-files.md), and the [app overview](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-upload-app.md) for a first end-to-end test upload. ## FAQ ### What are the ways customers can upload files to my Shopify store? Two surfaces, both set up when you install the app. An upload widget on the product pages you choose, so the file arrives tied to the order, and a standalone upload page published on your storefront that works with no order at all. You can run both at the same time. ### Do I have to edit my theme code to collect file uploads? No. When you save a widget the app publishes it to your storefront and re-syncs with Shopify for you, and the standalone upload page is published on install. If a widget ever doesn't show up, use Re-sync with Shopify on the dashboard. ### Where can uploaded files be delivered? To the app's built-in Cloud storage, which needs nothing set up and keeps files for 365 days, or to your own Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, Box or SFTP/FTP server. The destination is chosen per widget, so different widgets can deliver to completely different places. ### Do I get an email when someone uploads a file? Yes. Every completed upload sends an alert to the address in Notification settings. You can enter several comma-separated addresses to notify a team, and if you leave the field empty it defaults to your shop email. ### How long are uploaded files kept? Files in the app's built-in Cloud storage are kept for 365 days and can be downloaded from the dashboard. Files delivered into your own Google Drive, OneDrive or Box account are ordinary files in that account, so retention is entirely up to you. ### What file types can customers upload? Any file type — there is no whitelist to maintain, so artwork, PDFs, images and documents all go through. With Google Drive, OneDrive or Box as the destination, files can be up to 5 GB each. ### How do I know file collection is actually working? The Upload health card on the dashboard shows the delivery success rate over the last 30 days and flags anything that hasn't reached your storage. Stuck deliveries retry automatically every 30 minutes, and Retry now pushes one through immediately. ## Related - [Shopify File Upload App: Let Customers Upload Files With Their Orders](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-file-upload-app.md) - [Add a File Upload Field to Shopify Product Pages](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/shopify-product-upload-widget.md) - [Create a Standalone File Upload Page for Your Store](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/create-a-file-upload-page.md) - [Where Uploaded Files Go: Email, Dropbox, Google Drive & More](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/file-upload-storage-and-notifications.md) - [Find and Download Files Customers Uploaded With Orders](https://filetoinbox.com/docs/find-customer-uploaded-files.md)
